Testing of Suzuki Jimny Long wheelbase variant spotted

Suzuki seems to have finally started working on a more extended variant of its famous Jimny SUV. The earliest sighting of a test mule in Europe with a considerably long-wheelbase approves this development.

  • Jimny with Long-wheelbase seen for the first time
  • The long-wheelbase variant can also spawn a five-door version
  • Made-in-India 3-door Jimny already selling in few global markets

Suzuki Jimny long-wheelbase: What do these spy shots propose?

While this set of spy shots establish a long-wheelbase variant is being developed, a closer look shows that the test mule does not have doors for the second row, but only a glass window that is much longer alternatively.

This could mean that the 3-door long-wheelbase Jimny seen here could be a test mule for an extended c variant of the commercial-spec Jimny that’s already on in the European market.

However, this long-wheelbase variant will most likely underpin a 5-door passenger variant destined for India’s markets. With the longer wheelbase, Suzuki can do a pick-up variant, given that pick-ups of this size are familiar in a few global emerging markets.

As per the spy shots, the car has the same bumper, headlight, and grille setup as the regular Jimny and runs the same alloys wheels.

Suzuki Jimny long-wheelbase: What’s in store for the Indian market?

In a recent investor call, the model is being evaluated for an India launch, Maruti Suzuki, for the first time, verified. The manufacturers had showcased the SUV in India at the Auto Expo 2020.

As reported earlier, a 5-door Jimny will be produced for the India market and built alongside the 3-door variant that is already being manufactured at Maruti Suzuki’s plant in India.

Powering the Jimny is Suzuki’s K15B 1.5-litre petrol engine – the identical unit powers the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, Vitara Brezza, XL6 and Ciaz in India.
